The story of the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa (URCSA) is one of faith, resilience, unity and transformation. Rooted in the Reformed tradition, URCSA emerged from a complex history shaped by the realities of apartheid and the church’s journey towards unity, reconciliation and justice. The name Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa reflects its regional reach, with congregations and communities across South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi. For URCSA Tshwane, this wider story is also our story. Our congregation traces its roots to 1939, when it began as a branch of the Pretoria Congregation in Marabastad.
Since then, URCSA Tshwane has journeyed through changing times, church structures and society, becoming part of the newly formed URCSA in 1994. Our history is not simply a record of dates and institutional changes, but a story of the people who worshipped, served, persevered and helped shape the congregation we are today. To understand who we are, we must understand the journey that brought us here. The timeline below traces the key moments in that journey — from our beginnings in 1939, through the road to church unity, to the continuing story of URCSA Tshwane today.
